CSCP-PSC Merger (updated Sept 26, 2007)
An eight-person oversight committee has been formed to oversee the merging of the two societies; it comprises: society presidents, society financial officers, 2 members-at-large (one from each society), CSCP president-elect and one member who is a member-at-large of both societies.
Four sub-committees have also been formed and their mandate is to draft terms of reference for the committees under the “merged society”. These sub-committees are: finance, awards, membership and education. They have been asked to submit their new terms of reference to the merger committee by October 31, 2007.
Follow the link below to see the membership of each of the 4 sub-committees as well as the oversight committee. If you would like to volunteer for any of these committees please contact the relevant committee chair directly.

PSC’s has no formal scientific program. Their annual meeting has been held with other societies therefore they have provided input to the scientific program for the meeting they are jointly attending. The existing CSCP scientific program committee will be expanded to include PSC members.
Additional committees will be formed as needed. The Research committee may be the next to be brought under the merger umbrella especially if Dr. Jean Gray is successful in accessing funds to complete the CSCP Human resource study.
Both societies asked their memberships to vote for a new name for the merged society. By an over-whelming vote both memberships chose the following new proposed name for the merged society: CSPT-SCPT:
Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics / Société canadienne de pharmacologie et de thérapeutique
A resolution will be drafted for the name change, as required by Corporations Canada. Once the resolution is notarized then an official vote (electronic) by CSCP members will take place early in 2008.
The merger will follow the following logistics (unless some unforeseen issue is raised in the near future)
- CSCP will officially change its name to Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. This will allow us to keep our registered charitable status, which PSC does not have.
- PSC will merge with the new society
- PSC will transfer funds to the new society
- PSC and CSCP will cease to exist (except in the hearts of the membership)
- The new society: CSPT will join IUPHAR as the official society representing Canada on the international stage
Updates about the merger will be posted here as they become available.
